Technical sales engineer CV example
The example below shows how the advice in this guide fits together on one page. The person, the companies and all the figures are invented: use the structure, not the content, and replace every detail with your own.

Job title and professional summary
Choose a title that shows what you sell
Industrial sales roles range from capital equipment to components, automation, energy or engineering services. Naming your market is more informative than a generic title, as long as it reflects your experience:
Technical Sales Engineer – Industrial Automation
Sales Engineer – Process Equipment
Business Development Manager – Industrial Solutions
Key Account Manager – Manufacturing
Technical Sales Engineer – Engineering Services
The goal is not to stuff in keywords. A precise title lets recruiters, and the search tools they use, identify your market quickly.
Sales engineer, business development or key account manager: which title fits?
These titles overlap and their meaning varies between countries and sectors; in some markets, “sales engineer” mainly means technical pre-sales for software. Pick the one that matches your real work, and keep your actual past titles in the experience section.
| Title | Typical focus | Use it on your CV when… |
|---|---|---|
| Technical Sales Engineer | Selling technical products or solutions: needs analysis, quotations, tenders, negotiation, account follow-up | You own the sale and the customer relationship, with a technical background |
| Business Development Manager / Engineer | Finding new customers, markets or segments | Most of your work is new business |
| Key Account Manager | A small number of strategic accounts, often multi-site | Only if you really manage strategic accounts |
| Applications / Pre-sales Engineer | Technical support to sales: sizing, demonstrations, technical proposals | You support the sale technically but do not own it |
| Bid / Tender Engineer | Preparing and coordinating tender responses | Tenders are most of your work |
| Project Engineer / Project Manager | Delivering the contract after signature: planning, budget, technical delivery | Your role is delivery rather than sales |
Professional summary example: experienced technical sales engineer
The professional summary (often called a personal profile in the UK) is three to five lines that answer three questions: what is your profile, how much experience do you have, and what can you take charge of?
Technical sales engineer with 7 years’ experience selling technical B2B solutions to manufacturers. Develops a portfolio worth 4 million euros a year, from prospecting and needs analysis to tenders, negotiation and follow-up during delivery, working closely with engineering teams.
Professional summary example: junior technical sales engineer
Engineering graduate ([degree], [year]) with a [one-year] work-study placement in industrial sales. Hands-on experience prospecting manufacturers, qualifying needs, preparing quotations, updating the CRM and joining customer meetings with the technical team.
Adapt these examples to your real situation. “Dynamic, ambitious and results-driven” says nothing about your market or level of responsibility.
Technical sales engineer CV skills by area
A technical sales engineer’s work typically covers prospecting and qualification, technical understanding, offers and tenders, negotiation and closing, account management and performance tracking. Select the skills that match your real sales cycle and industry, then phrase them so a recruiter can see how you used them.
| Area | Skills to consider | How to phrase it on a CV |
|---|---|---|
| Prospecting and qualification | Target accounts, outreach, trade shows, budget and decision process, stakeholder mapping | “Identified target manufacturers and qualified needs, budget and timing before involving engineering.” |
| Technical understanding | Reading specifications, translating needs for the design office, feasibility, technical presentations | “Analysed customer specifications and reformulated requirements with the design office.” |
| Offers and tenders | Quotations, cost build-up with engineering, tender responses, proposal presentations | “Coordinated tender responses with design, production and legal and presented them to buyers.” |
| Negotiation and contracts | Price, lead time and terms, concessions, change orders, handover to delivery | “Negotiated price, lead time and terms and prepared change orders for out-of-scope requests.” |
| Accounts and growth | Portfolio management, key accounts, account plans, repeat business, partners and distributors | “Managed [X] industrial accounts worth [Y] million euros a year.” |
| Performance and tools | Pipeline, forecast, conversion rate, margin tracking, CRM, Excel, BI | “Updated the pipeline weekly and built the monthly forecast in Salesforce.” |
A skills line such as this gives little information:
Business development · Negotiation · Industry · CRM · Project management
This one is far more useful:
Complex B2B sales · Specification analysis · Quotations and tenders · Price and terms negotiation · Account portfolio · Pipeline and forecast · Salesforce
Describing your experience and achievements
In industrial sales, recruiters look at your market, your sales cycle and your results. For each line, follow this order where possible:
context → your own action → tools or method → scope → result
For example: “For a manufacturer planning a new production line (context), I led the tender response (action), coordinating the costing with the design office and production (method) for a 1.2-million-euro project (scope), and won the contract after two negotiation rounds (result).” The figures in this sentence are illustrative.

Key accounts
More informative
Illustrative figures.
Sold automation solutions to manufacturers in automotive, food and logistics
Managed 35 accounts worth 4.2 million euros a year
Built quotations and tender responses with the design office
Negotiated price, lead time and terms through to contract
Opened 14 new accounts in 12 months; target reached at 115%
The second version shows the market, the scope, the sales steps and the results. Be clear about your role: quotations are often built with engineering and finance, and delivery is led by a project manager. Say what you led and what you coordinated. Use the indicator your company actually tracks (orders, revenue or margin) and make sure every figure can be explained.
Achievement examples to adapt
Replace [X] and [Y] with your own verified figures, or leave the line out if you cannot support it.
- Grew the portfolio from [X] to [Y] million euros a year over [period].
- Opened [X] new industrial accounts in [Y] months.
- Won a [X]-million-euro contract after a competitive tender.
- Raised the conversion rate of quotations from [X]% to [Y]%.
- Kept average margin on signed orders above target by [method].
- Launched a new product range with [X] reference customers in its first year.
CRM and tools: show how you used them
Name the tools you have actually used and say what for:
Salesforce: pipeline, opportunities, forecast and customer history
HubSpot: lead qualification, follow-ups and opportunity tracking
Excel: quotations, margin scenarios and sales tracking
Power BI: revenue, margin and pipeline by sector or account
This is more informative than:
Salesforce: proficient
Technical tools can matter too: reading drawings, using sizing or configuration software, or knowing the products you sell. Mention them when they are part of how you sell. Do not add a BI tool or a sales method as a keyword if your use is occasional.
Education and qualifications
On your CV, use the format qualification – specialism – institution – year:
[Degree] – [mechanical / electrical / industrial engineering, or business]
[Institution] — [year]
Technical sales engineers often have an engineering or technical degree, sometimes combined with business studies. The specialism is worth stating when it matches what you sell, for example mechanical engineering for mechanical equipment. For an experienced profile, results matter more than the degree.
Sales training or certifications can be listed if relevant, but they do not replace a track record. Languages deserve a precise line when you use them with customers, for example “English: negotiations, proposal presentations and customer meetings”.
Making your technical sales engineer CV easy to read for ATS
Many industrial employers use an applicant tracking system (ATS) or recruitment software to store and search applications, often by sector and skill. The aim is not to “beat” or trick an ATS: it is to make sure your key information is extracted correctly and easy to find.
- an explicit job title with your industry or product type;
- clearly identifiable employers and dates;
- experience organised role by role;
- key figures (portfolio, orders, new accounts, target) written as text;
- common terms written in full: tenders, quotations, negotiation, key accounts, pipeline, CRM;
- a simple layout without text inside images.
When a job ad asks for a skill you genuinely have, use its vocabulary. If your CV only says “B2B business developer” while you actually sell “automation solutions to manufacturers, with tenders up to 3 million euros”, the second phrasing is more precise for both the software and the recruiter.
Tailoring your technical sales engineer CV to each job
Tailoring helps, because industrial sales roles lean in different directions. Your background does not change, but you can bring forward the experience most relevant to the job’s main focus.
| Main focus of the job | What to bring forward (if you have done it) |
|---|---|
| New business | New accounts, prospecting methods, new markets or segments |
| Key accounts | Strategic accounts, account plans, multi-site customers, repeat business |
| Tenders | Tender sizes, coordination with engineering and legal, win rate |
| Technical solution selling | Products sold, specifications analysed, technical presentations |
| Project-based sales | Follow-up after signature, change orders, coordination with the project manager |
| International | Countries covered, distributors, languages used in negotiations |

Junior technical sales engineer or career changer
With little sales experience, the same principle applies: be precise about what you have actually done.
- Students and recent graduates: describe work-study and placements like real jobs: prospecting, qualification, quotations, CRM, customer meetings.
- Engineers moving into sales: customer contact, sizing, quotations and technical presentations are assets; show any commercial responsibility you have had, without hiding the gaps.
- Salespeople moving into industry: bring forward complex B2B sales, long cycles, tenders and work with technical teams, plus any sector training.
- Moving towards management: state clearly whether you lead people or act as a reference for colleagues.
Mechanical engineer with 8 years in technical roles, including 3 years supporting sales with sizing, quotations and customer presentations, now moving into technical sales.
Trained or working in France?
If your background is French, a few adjustments make your CV clearer to English-speaking recruiters.
French qualifications
Keep the French name of your qualification and add a short explanation, without claiming an equivalence with British, American or other degrees:
- Diplôme d’ingénieur: a French engineering degree, generally awarded after five years of higher education; add your specialism.
- École de commerce – [programme name]: a French business school; give the programme name as written by the school.
- Alternance: a French work-study programme; describe it as a work-study placement and treat it as real experience.
Diplôme d’ingénieur – génie mécanique (French engineering degree in mechanical engineering, five years of higher education)
[School] — [year]
French job titles and terms
Translate the role, not the words. An “ingénieur d’affaires” is usually a technical sales engineer, sales engineer or business development manager depending on the scope; an “ingénieur commercial” is similar. An “appel d’offres” is a tender or request for proposal, the “chiffrage” is the costing or quotation, the “bureau d’études” is the design office or engineering team, an “avenant” is a change order or contract amendment, and a “soutenance” is a proposal presentation. Write amounts with the currency spelled out, for example “4 million euros” rather than “4 M€”.
Mistakes to avoid and final checklist
Giving no figures
Portfolio, orders, revenue or margin are essential to place your performance.
Not saying what you sell
The industry and technical level of your solutions matter to the recruiter.
Writing only “business development”
Explain your methods, your market and your sales cycle.
Blurring sales and project delivery
Separate your commercial responsibility from the technical delivery led by others.
Calling yourself a key account manager without strategic accounts
Describe the types of customers you actually manage.
Translating job titles word for word
If your experience is in another language, translate the role, not the words, and keep qualification names in their original language with a short explanation.
Checklist before you apply
- My title states my industry or product type and, if useful, my experience.

- My work with engineering and project teams is described accurately.
- Each tool listed is one I have actually used.

Which figures should I put on a technical sales engineer CV?
Portfolio value, orders or revenue, margin, new accounts and target achievement, using the indicator your company tracks.

How do I move from an engineering role into technical sales?
Show your understanding of customer needs, your experience of quotations and technical presentations, and any commercial responsibility you have already had.
